 Emily Plewe creates multivalent, multilayered, multidimensional, and metaphoric work that emerges from concepts found within quantum physics and cosmology. 

"I find it utterly compelling to create work that is imbued with scientific concepts that address fundamental ideas about what reality is. In wrestling with these concepts, I add my artistic voice to the countless voices engaging in a collective dialogue about our place and meaning in this endless, strange universe.

I explore themes of interaction, energy, and interrelationships. The work is deeply informed by my studies of quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, cosmology and light. 

To prepare for each work, I employ an intellectual process I refer to as Informed Intuition. The definition of intuition that most resonates with me comes from philosopher Henri Bergson:

"Intuition is a method of feeling one's way intellectually into the inner heart of a thing to locate what is unique and inexpressible in it."

In this process I delve into a theory or discovery, then I identify concepts which excite me, which I find unique and inexpressible or difficult to comprehend visually. I develop an intuitive visual response to the material I’m studying from which a creative, interpretive work emerges. It is very important to my process not to ‘Illustrate’ or ‘explain’ anything. Accessing my intuition, I employ abstract techniques and a visual language I have developed over the course of my career which results in work that inhabits a liminal space between vague understanding and pure incomprehensible wonder.”

I feel that there are innovations and insights to be gained by intuiting and committing to paper/canvas ideas and visuals for things which may not be visible or even truly knowable. Art asks deep questions and can explore and interweave disparate concepts into a newly configured whole."
